Comprehension & Vocabulary (EN2304) is designed to help students develop stronger academic reading and vocabulary skills. The course uses a range of thematic texts and practical activities to help students understand academic texts more effectively, identify important information, develop vocabulary in context, and think critically about what they read.
Students will practice useful reading strategies such as identifying main ideas and supporting details, taking notes, distinguishing facts from opinions, and using context to understand unfamiliar words. The course also develops knowledge of word forms, collocations, synonyms and antonyms, and phrasal verbs. Through individual, pair, and group activities, students will build confidence in reading and responding to academic texts.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify the main ideas and important supporting details in academic texts.
- Use effective reading strategies, such as scanning, note-taking, and distinguishing facts from opinions.
- Understand and use new vocabulary by using context, word forms, collocations, and phrasal verbs.
- Analyze texts by comparing different viewpoints and identifying problems and solutions.
- Think critically about what you read and support your ideas with information from the text.
